I however have verrrrry short layered dark brown hair.

I would suggest getting it professionally done. I know it's cheaper to do it yourself but if you are using bleach (which is very harsh on your hair) it is easy to mess up.

I would have them do caramel highlights with some red.

they both look dramatic in the pictures but if you have them weave the two colors in with foils it will look really good.
