How do black girls highlight thier hair? I either want highlights or lowlights.?

I am a mixed/black girl going in 6th grade. I really want highlights or lowlights in my hair. My mom wasn't sure if I could do it cause most of the things they make in stores are for "white girls hair" my mom says. I want pics,website,methods, and ideas. Thanks!

Can your mom take you to a wig store where you could try on

wigs of black hair that have highlights in them to see

how you'd even like the look? I think you'd have to be very

experienced in applying hair color over time, to know what

looks good with your particular skin tones. I have seen some

black women who absolutely had no clue as to what color

they should have used and how brash or harsh looking some

colors make black hair. Especially blond or deep red tones

that come out more purple than red.

I would go to a salon in a neighborhood which specializes

in black hair do's. They've got the knowlege of what has to

happen first before even coloring. Maybe there is a pre

treatment required for the type of hair you have. I know from

working with black childrens hair when I worked in a childrens

home, that their hair was more oily, almost like a baby lamb, before it was brushed. So I'd have it professionally

done, where they take a test strip to see what the color will

be like before they do an entire head of hair. Once I saw the

most beautiful shade of deep burgundy on a white woman in

a reception job. And I had to ask where she had it done. And

she told me it was in a black womans' shop on such and

such street and it took her hours for the complete coloring

and braiding of the curls she had done. I have yet to see any-

thing as fabulous as her hair color and style to this day. The

person who did her, was an artist.

I would go into a salon. It's too risky for anyone to do their own color and the last thing you want is for it to turn out bad and have to show face at school.
