the safest way to go lighter (besides letting the sun highlight it naturally) would be to visit a salon and have it professionally lightened, this will minimize the possible damage from any "home remedies"

btw, please for your sake, do not use peroxide at home.....you'll end up with orange hair that is fried and possibly breaking off.
