I just got my hair highlighted... I plan to dye my hair a bit darker than my natural color (from medium/light brown to medium/dark brown) in a few months getting rid of the highlights. Do salons do anything special to prep the highlighted hair to bring it to the dye color or do they just dye it? And does the hair retain some of the highlight making the darker dyed hair stay a little lighter than the rest? This would be my first time getting it dyed I may add.

Not really. The dark color will take very well because of your light hair.
