How can i dye my hair %26amp; do highlights?

Hi! I'm a hairstylist.

Just to let you know, many new clients that I get come to me because they did their own hair at home and messed it up. I'm not saying you will mess it up, but coloring your hair one color is one thing... but doing highlights can be very tricky if you do it on your own. Even though they sell these cheap kits at the drugstore, you should have another female friend do it for you. Pick a female friend that has nice hair so that you know she will do a good job for you. : )

But I'm just warning you that you may not be happy with results. What color is your hair now? If it is really dark, chances are that you may get brassy yellow or orange highlights. You have no clue as to what developer is in a drugstore kit if you get one there. Is it 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 volume?

If your hair is light brown to blonde, then you may highlight your hair and make it too blonde. So be careful with that.

If you color your hair first, and THEN highlight it over the color, that is double processing your hair which means you are doing double the damage. That's why you should get a professional stylist to do it, by letting them put the dark and the light color in your hair in a single process. Yes it may cost more than doing it at home, but you are paying a professional to do it who has experience. There are always salons who charge less than the $100+ for highlights and lowlights.

So if you want to be safe, then do it at a salon with a stylist who has a good reputation and good client retention.

On the other hand, fixing people's mistakes who did it at home is a moneymaker for me as a stylist. Color corrections are usually very expensive and are a result of people doing their own hair at home and don't get good results. Many salons do color corrections and charge by the hour because they can take a long time and they charge a lot for it.

If you like playing with hair, you should be a hairstylist! : )

dye your hair first.....then depending on your lengh if its really short do pull thru the cap...if its any longer than a bob do foils...but this may be hard to do not at a salon, becaue you have to weave strangs and sort of paint the dye on then wrap up in foil or wax paper. You will have to buy blonde for the highlights and depending on how long you keep the dye on your hair will depend on how blonde they get....you have to do blonde because you cannot dye lighter..you can only dye darker....when salons dye lighter they use bleach forumulas. If i were you I would dye your hair yourself..then go to the salon for the highlights.

there are certain brands of hair dye that have a little brush thing for highlights, it works pretty well for longer hair. It is a two step process though.

no don't do a cap and don't use a brush, those are going to break your hair and have uneven results. caps and brushes are really only for super short hair, if you hair is longer than a few inches, then you need foil the highlights. highlighting and dyeing is a very tricky process. you need to first clip up the top half of your hair, then dye the bottom of your hair. let your hair down. starting in the back, pick out where your first highlight is going to go and clip it foward, and dye the part behind it. lay the piece of hair on the foil and apply the bleach or dye that you chose, then fold over the highlighted piece. repeat till you get to the front. wash your hair with freezing cold water to prevent blending.

Have a friend help you...

to put highlights in your hair: section your hair then weave each section with a tail comb then put a peice of aluminum foil under neath the weaved section and paint on the peroxide or whatever chemicals you are using... fold the foil up and clip it...continue wherever you want your highlights...

then take a bottle of hair dye and apply that to your hair while the highlights are "cooking" your hair with then be highlighted and dyed...

Its really not difficult but I don't suggest doing your own hair-- a friend will do.
