I would suggest a cool color, like you mentioned; a blue-based red such as maroon, burgundy, wine colored. Stay away from colors which are too warm. If you like gold, keep it sparse and don't go too light. Good luck!

If you have never looked into using henna for red highlights I highly recommend it. Go to http://www.hennaforhair.com to look into it. This is a natural dye which is actually good for hair. If you don't like the results it will wash out in about 4-6 weeks. Think about it %26amp; have fun %26amp; good luck.

Either consult with a colorist or, if you are trying it at home, try it on a section of your hair on the underneath side and do a sample swatch to see what it will look like.

If you are not sure what shade you want, there are many temporary products on the market (most wash out in 1 - 8 shampoos) that you can try without making the commitment if you do not like them and all that I have found are under $10 and some as cheap as $2. A small price to pay for not making a permanent mistake. If you find a shade you like, you can go to a professional colorist, at least for the first time, to get a product that will match that effect. Once you know the product and how long the colorist leaves it in, you can duplicate the effect at home.

A major problem if you have very dark hair is that the product on the box will never look like what the finished products will be as pitch black hair is hard to remove the pigment from. What looks like copper or red on the box comes off looking brassy and fake. The first time I had my hair bleached it turned out a hideous shade of brassy fake orange and ended up going to a professional colorist anyway...better off to start there. If you are truly budget strapped, most cities have a licensed beauty school in them or nearby and they are supervised by licensed beauticians and you can have the work done at a fraction of the price.
